Celebrating the Holidays in Downtown Allentown

This year, Downtown Allentown is celebrating the holiday season in the biggest way yet!  From tree-lightings to New Years celebrations, there is something downtown for everyone this holiday season.

To kick off the celebration, the Hamilton District Main Street Program in partnership with the City of Allentown will host a Tree Lighting Ceremony on Thursday, December 3rd.  The festivities start at 4:00p.m., and will end at approximately 7:00p.m. at the 800 block of Hamilton Street.  Activities include musical performances, dance arts, horse-drawn carriage rides, face painting, and an appearance by Santa himself!  This event is free and open to share the holiday spirit with the community!

Through the weeks before Christmas, the Allentown Lights are also open.  Since the Parkway is under construction this year, the famous “Lights in the Parkway” collection has been sprinkled all over downtown Allentown.  Locations include Cedar Beach Park, Andre Reed Park, and of course, Allentown Artswalk and Hamilton Street to add a little sparkle to your holiday shopping experience.

The month of December hosts a sleigh full of theater productions to experience with your family this season.  Civic Theater of Allentown in the nearby Theater District will host several showings of its seasonal tradition, A Christmas Carol, and  Miller Symphony Hall is hosting Repertory Dance Theater’s vision of the holiday classic, The Nutcracker.  For those looking for something a little different, the PPL Center will be hosting Cirque de Soleil’s Toruk – The First Light which is based on James Cameron’s Avatar. Tickets for all these shows are available through their websites, or at the local box offices.

Even the Hamilton District’s monthly First Mondays are taking a holiday twist this month.  The event will be held on December 5th at the National Penn Bank building.  Get your picture taken with Santa while enjoying complimentary food and drinks, plus live music by Mike Mauro. National Penn will also be collecting donations for the Allentown Rescue Mission Clean Team in the form of winter apparel.  It is a time for local businesses to come and mix, mingle, and celebrate!

Finally, after all the presents are unwrapped and leftovers eaten, the Allentown Chamber of Commerce invites you to come ring in the New Year with the downtown Allentown community. On December 31st, starting at 10:00p.m., there will be live music and fireworks to commemorate the start of 2016.

The holidays are a time to celebrate with family and community, and we hope you’ll join us downtown for an Allentown Holiday Celebration!
