Downtown Businesses Encourage Employees to Live Nearby
Date: Jul 07, 2015
Amidst the heavy influx of downtown businesses thanks to the NIZ (Neighborhood Improvement Zone), another type of movement is occurring downtown. Several downtown employers
announced their participation in a new housing program called “Live Near Your Work.” This initiative encourages employees to purchase or rent housing within walking distance of work. Some of these companies include Lehigh Valley Health Network, CrossAmerica Partners, PPL, National Penn Bank, Trifecta Technologies, and Alvin H. Butz, Inc.
The perimeters of the program are similar to the Hamilton District’s boundaries; between 5th and 12th streets and Walnut to Liberty (our district stops at Linden). Full-time employees living within the grid could receive a large grant from participating companies of $10,000. The money, doled out on a first-come, first-serve basis, works to help pay for down payments, closing costs and renovations. The only other catch is that the employee must own and occupy the space for at least five consecutive years thereby encouraging the unofficial catchphrase to live, play and work downtown.
With the arrival of a large amount of eateries, a consistently diverse lineup of events at the PPL Center and numerous big-name businesses residing downtown, it would be hard to pass up an opportunity to participate in the Live Near Your Work program. Lehigh Valley Health Network announced that within one day of offering the deal, 10 employees signed up and another five are on the waiting list. Neighborhood Housing Services along with the Downtown Allentown Community Development Initiative (DACDI) will help employees find appropriate housing, the best mortgage and more.
