Business Development, Event Management Intern
Job Description


The Business Development Internship is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students (currently enrolled or recently graduated) seeking careers in city planning/management, policy & politics, economic & community development, urban development or real estate. The program is designed for ambitious individuals seeking not only to build a strong resume, but also to make an impact on the community as they further develop important skills critical to a successful career.


The Business Development Intern will work with the Main Street Manager to conduct research, marketing, and correspondence with diverse stakeholders in support of HDMSP’s business retention and recruitment efforts. The student is encouraged to design their own project to complete that will contribute to both HDMSP’s efforts and the students’ academic and/or professional development.  


The student will learn about the Main Street Program’s 5-Point Approach and the National Main Street Center vision.


General Qualifications/Requirements:
• Must be a college junior or above.
• Internship experience strongly recommended
• Ability to multi-task well and under pressure; excellent attention to detail
• Maintain effective working relationships with clients, media and internal staff
• Highly motivated and enthusiastic individual who exhibits professionalism and tenacity
• Ability to research and compile information on downtown events with little supervision
• Excellent written communications skills; notetaking, minutes, etc. 

 

General Responsibilities:
Reporting Statistics and Database Management
• Compiling data and entering into the Pennsylvania Downtown Center report database
• Update database file of properties and property owners within the Main Street boundaries

 

Business Development Activities and Efforts 
• Assist in the completion of welcome and SWAG bags for new tenants, residents and events
• Accompany Main Street Manager in meetings, activities, and programs related to HDMSP business development initiatives
• Accompany Main Street Manager in retail/restaurant business visitations
• Assist in development of the AMP Gift Card Program including database management and promotion

 

Marketing & Events
• Taking pictures around downtown for social media postings
• Researching and finding content on the internet to help promote downtown 
• Attending as many downtown events as the students schedule will allow and assist with any registration or picture taking. Fall semester would include: 

Allentown Beer Fest, September 22nd
Howl-O-Ween, Dog Trick or Treating, October 20th
The Jingle Bell Cocktail Trail, November 24th
Tree Lighting Ceremony, December 6th
Monthly events, First Monday / Third Thursday

Marketing & Events Intern
Job Description

The Marketing & Events Internship is ideal for undergraduate and graduate students (currently enrolled or recently graduated) seeking careers in public relations, marketing, social media management or business management. The program is designed for ambitious individuals seeking to not only a strong resume, but make an impact on the community as they further develop important skills critical to a successful career. 


He or she must be highly motivated, have strong writing & creative thinking skills, and be able to multi-task while staying organized. The intern will learn about the Main Street Program’s 5-Point Approach and begin implementing marketing strategies to promote downtown Allentown. 

 

General Requirements/Qualifications:
• Must be a college junior or above
• Internship experience strongly recommended
• Ability to write and think creatively
• Familiarity with social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter and Instagram
• General knowledge of email marketing a plus (Constant Contact, Mail Chimp, for example)
• Strong writing and communication skills

 

General Responsibilities:
Social Media/Website Maintenance

• Administer the Facebook pages of the Allentown Chamber of Commerce, Hamilton District Main Street Program & Destination Arts: Third Thursday
• Administer the Twitter & Instagram accounts for the Hamilton District Main Street Program
• Schedule posts each week; or post while out and about in downtown 
• Take photos of downtown and create content on a weekly basis
• Implement social media campaigns for the AMP gift card program and all major events (First Monday; Restaurant Week; Blues, Brews & Barbecue; Sip into Spring Cocktail Trail; Allentown Beer Fest)
• Research and find content for weekly email blasts; assist in drafting weekly email blasts
• Create fliers for Ribbon Cuttings and First Mondays 
• Add downtown events to online calendar weekly
• Draft articles for website 

 

Marketing & Events
• Draft press releases 
• Research event ideas and present findings 
• Maintain a database of vendors 
• Take pictures and live feed during events to post on social media 
• May need to be available for occasional off-site events during the workday, evenings, and/or weekends

Time Commitment:
September through December 2018
10-15 hours per week (about 200 hours in total)

Compensation:
These are unpaid internships that will help you make invaluable connections in the local community. In addition, academic credit and flexible work locations can be arranged.
