Music is in the Air

Date: Aug 03, 2015

The musical groups in downtown Allentown have all worked together very nicely to create a fantastic lineup of music.

On Tuesdays, the Allentown Department of Parks and Recreation hosts Lively Lunches in the Park from noon to 1:30pm. They’ve had the pleasure of hosting performers like Tim Harakal, Jordan White, Mike Pilgermayer and others. We look forward to welcoming Sydnie Keddington, Paulie Knakk and Kendal Conrad, as well. For a complete listing follow this link. Parks also hosts a concert series mainly in West Park with groups like the Pioneer Band, the Allentown Band, the Marine Band, and more. To see the schedule follow this link.

The Hamilton District Main Street Program started its Summer in the City concert series on May 28th with the Supra Ayers Killcoyne Shelly Quartet at the PPL plaza. Business men and women stop by during their lunch breaks on Thursdays from 11:45am to 1:15pm to relax and catch some rays while enjoying the upbeat tunes. The turnout for these gatherings has been wonderful. To help spread the love, the venue changes each month to expose people to more of downtown. It alternates between the PPL plaza and 7th and Hamilton in front of Johnny’s Bagels & Deli.

Since the first concert, the HDMSP has welcomed plenty of local acts like Steve Brosky & Jimmy Meyer, Todd Wolfe Band, Craig Thatcher and Nyke Van Wyk, Tavern Tan and more. The community can also look forward to The Doug Hawk Proposition, Dynamic Duo, and Dave Fry, to name a few. For a complete list, visit our website.

The Hamilton District Main Street Program also hosted its 8th annual Blues, Brews and Barbecue festival on Saturday June 13th. The day-long event was filled with entertaining blues performers. This was the first year they welcomed a national act, Joe Louis Walker who drew a huge crowd to close out the night. The festival also hosted Edward David Anderson, Clarence Spady Band, and other great local Blues bands.

City Center Lehigh Valley also introduced their Summer Concert Series on Fridays between 5 and 7pm. They also moved their location around but in restaurants like ROAR Social House, The Dime, The Hamilton Kitchen & Bar and Shula’s Steak House. With some similar acts as the HDMSP, City Center has also welcomed others like Breeze, Brian of the Coconutz, Rad & Kell and The Peptone Trio. Most recently they welcomed the Dueling Pianos at Shula’s Steak House. Next week you can look forward to the JJ Rupp Duo.

Additionally, St. John’s Lutheran Church opened their doors for locals to enjoy the sounds of the Bach Choir of Bethlehem for Bach at Noon. With free admission, the church was packed for each session. With its amazing success, there are already dates set for the 2016 summer series.

With the amazing success of this summer’s concert series, residents can be sure to look forward to similar plans for the summer of 2016.
