*All necessary garden tools and materials will be provided.*
The Hamilton District Main Street Program in partnership with the City of Allentown and the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce is leading a streetscape improvement project focused on improving the existing sidewalk flower/tree planter beds located along Hamilton Street at four intersections between 6th and 10th Streets.
The ultimate goal of this project is the development and maintenance of attractive, sustainable green space in the core of downtown Allentown (please see "Sample Proposed Condition" rendering below).
Native plant species are being selected based on their ability to thrive in this environment with minimal required maintenance. Planting schemes will vary based on soil and shade conditions specific to each planter location. In addition to the project's aesthetic benefits, it will serve as an educational opportunity while highlighting the strong and growing community partnerships that are restoring vibrancy to the downtown area.
Phase I - Saturday, April 25th
Prepare the four (4) planter beds at the intersection of 8th and Hamilton Streets for future planting of native annual and perennial plant species which will be delivered later this spring. Phase I will include:
Removal of debris from the planter beds
Tilling/turning 4 inches of leaf mould into the soil surface
Spreading an additional 2 inches of leaf mould on top as a covering
Phase II - Late May
Plant a combination of annuals and perennials in the four (4) planter beds located at the intersection of 8th and Hamilton Streets.
The project is being funded in part by a grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies and the City of Allentown. Financial sponsoring organizations currently include Norris McLaughlin & Marcus, P.A. and RETTEW, Associates, Inc., ArcheWild, and Dan Schantz Farm and Greenhouses, LLC. Additional sponsors are being sought.
