Gender Queer Egyptian Pharohs and the lesbian rebels who studied them

Pharaoh Amenhotep IV, also known as Heretic King, was destined to be remembered for his attempt at a religious conversion of ancient Egypt, but he’s also remembered for the gender-queer representations of him that show the strong possibility that he may have been Transgender or Intersex. That and other Queer aspects of Ancient Egyptian archeological discoveries with be featured in this class. And we’ll also learn about Lesbian archaeologist Amelia Edwards and friends, who wrote extensively about her experiences in the late 1800s exploring tombs and archeological sites along the Nile. And of course there will be fabulous snacks by Trish Sullivan!

Sit back, view slides, listen, learn about and discuss the lives and work of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer artists. Consider the LGBTQ imagery of mainstream artists in various periods of history. And after the class there is also a social opportunity with themed snacks, to discuss interesting things with old friends, or meet new ones in this exciting free 4 session class at the LGBT Community Center. This is a popular class attended by a diverse and intergenerational group of about 40-45 LGBTQA folks per class. It’s fun and funny – a good place to bring old friends, or meet new friends, or bring someone on a nice first date!
